WHERE TO MEET AND NETWORK IN ACCRA
The expat networks in Accra are well developed so meeting other people and getting acquainted with a social circle of like-minded individuals will not be difficult. Unlike other countries where it’s harder to break into these circles, you will find the openness amongst expats in Ghana refreshing.
The beauty of the expat network, in Accra specifically, is that it is very welcoming to new arrivals and people are always on hand to share advice and tips.
You could start by looking at joining one or more of the following organisations:
- The North American Women’s Association (NAWA – https://www.nawaghana.com/),
- The francophone association Accra Accueil (https://accraaccueil.com/),
- The British in Ghana Society (BiGS – britishinghanasociety@gmail.com),
- The Ghana International Women’s Club (GIWC – ghanaiwc@gmail.com).
These groups not only arrange gatherings and coffee mornings but also major social events throughout the calendar year as well as charity functions. There are even groups for specific nationalities’ such as the Latin group, South Africans in Ghana group, Indian Women’s Association etc.
Smaller groups arrange more intimate gatherings based on specific interests and hobbies such as sewing, photography or painting – see our section “Fun & interesting activities” for more details. For moms, there is the Mummy & Me Ghana community on Facebook.
Apart from official organisations, a great way to meet others is through your child’s school, through your local gym, or by getting involved in some kind of volunteer activity at one of the many NGO’s in Accra.
Tip: There are a number of expat pages on Facebook you can join which can come in handy if you need to ask questions, get advice and tips or just to be informed on what’s happening in your area or near you (Accra Expats, Ghana International Expats, Ghana Expats, Expat Pet Owners in Ghana, Vegan Ghana).
Expat Advice: Try to make friends with people from all over the world and not necessarily only from your home country. It makes the expat experience so much more interesting!
